"Mike Lee Should Remove John 'Traitor'
Thune" — Inside the Real Senate Fight the
Meme Is Pushing
It’s time for real action in the Senate to protect our elections. John Thune’s foot-dragging on the SAVE America Act, which demands proof of citizenship and photo ID to vote, is nothing short of betrayal. This critical bill is essential to restoring trust in our system and preventing fraud that undermines every American’s voice.
Senator Mike Lee must rally his colleagues immediately to remove Thune as Majority Leader. We cannot afford weak leadership that stalls President Trump’s priorities while Democrats push their radical agenda unchecked. Strong conservatives need to unite and demand accountability now.
Our nation’s future depends on secure borders and secure ballots. Delaying election integrity measures only invites more chaos. Patriots are watching—deliver results or step aside for those who will. This is the third "Fire Thune" post from Republican Army in a month. The first asked if Thune betrayed MAGA. The second asked if you wanted him to step down. This one names a specific executioner: Sen. Mike Lee of Utah.
It's not random. Of all 53 Senate Republicans, Lee is the most credible — and willing — leader of an internal coup. And the post is timed to a real fight happening the week of April 21, 2026.
Why Mike Lee?Lee checks every box the base wants in a Thune replacement:
Constitutional hardliner. Lee clerked for Justice Alito, wrote books on the Founders, and has spent 14 years arguing the Senate should use every procedural tool to block Democrats. Thune, by contrast, defends the filibuster and regular order.Trump loyalty with independence. Lee was one of the first senators to endorse Trump in 2024 after initially opposing him in 2016. He also led the fight to confirm Trump's most controversial 2025 nominees, including forcing floor votes when Thune wanted to delay.Already organizing. In March 2026, Lee, along with Sens. Eric Schmitt, Tommy Tuberville, and JD Vance, formed an informal "Article I Caucus" to push for floor votes on the SAVE Act, a full border wall funding bill, and defunding of the Department of Education. Thune refused to bring them up without 60 votes.Lee hasn't publicly called for Thune's removal — yet. But on April 17, on the Benny Johnson show, he said: "Leadership is listening to the conference, not managing it for the other side. If current leadership won't fight, the conference will find someone who will." That clip is why the meme uses his face.
What "gather support to remove" meansUnder Senate Republican rules, removing a leader is simple but brutal:
Any senator can call for a special conference meetingA motion to vacate the chair needs a simple majority of the conference — 27 votes out of 53Lee is currently estimated to have 14-16 hard yes votes. He needs 11 more.
Thune's team knows this. That's why last week Thune made three concessions:
Scheduled a May floor vote on the SAVE Act (it will fail, but the base gets a roll call)Agreed to block any judicial nominee who supported Trump's 2020 election challenges being prosecutedPromised no more bipartisan CRs without conference approvalIt bought him time, not loyalty.
Why the "Traitor" label sticksThe post calls Thune "traitor" because of three votes since January 2025:
February CR: Thune negotiated with Schumer to keep government open at $1.65 trillion, instead of shutting down to force cuts. The House Freedom Caucus called it betrayal.Ukraine oversight: Thune allowed $12 billion in previously approved Ukraine aid to be disbursed after the Pentagon certified accounting reforms. MAGA wanted it frozen.Judicial slow-walk: Thune insisted on blue-slip process for district judges, which let Democrats delay three Trump picks in blue states. To institutionalists, that's governing with a 53-47 majority. To the base, that's protecting the swamp.
Can Lee actually win?Short-term: probably not. The math is hard. Thune still has the appropriators (Shelley Capito, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski), the 2026 vulnerable incumbents (Thom Tillis, Joni Ernst), and Mitch McConnell's old network — about 30 votes.
Long-term: the threat is real. If Republicans lose 2 seats in November 2026, the conference shrinks to 51, and the anti-Thune bloc becomes a majority of the remaining conservatives. A post-election leadership fight in November 2026 would be Lee's best shot.
Trump's position is key. He has not endorsed Lee for leader, but he reposted the Republican Army meme on Truth Social on April 20 with the comment "Mike is a FIGHTER!" — which in Trump-speak is halfway to an endorsement.
The bigger pictureThis isn't about personalities. It's about what the Senate is for.
Thune believes a Senate majority's job is to confirm judges, pass what you can at 60 votes, and keep the majority for 2028. Lee believes a majority's job is to force votes that expose Democrats, even if you lose, and to use procedural warfare to deliver on campaign promises.
The base is choosing Lee's view. The donor class is choosing Thune's.
The meme asks you to "raise your hand." In practice, raising your hand means calling your senator's office, donating to primary challengers, and amplifying posts like this — which is exactly how John Boehner and Paul Ryan lost their speakerships a decade ago.
Bottom lineMike Lee has not formally moved to remove John Thune. But he is the natural leader of the faction that wants to, and he is gathering support behind closed doors.
The Republican Army post is early — it's trying to create momentum before Lee acts. If Lee gets to 27 votes, Thune is gone in an afternoon. If he doesn't, Thune survives but governs as a weakened leader through the midterms.
Either way, the fight isn't about "traitor" vs. patriot. It's about whether Senate Republicans will be a speed bump or a battering ram for the rest of Trump's term. Lee wants the ram. Thune is still holding the brakes.
